Arriving in Corfu

   Arriving in Corfu

The old fortress from the ship, as you can see it is quite a hike to the top

The town as you come along the waterside

The Old Fortress of Corfu is one of the most impressive fortification works in Europe. It is the first thing to see as the ferry approaches Corfu. It stands on the eastern side of the town, on a rocky peninsula that gets into the sea. This fortress was also built to protect the town from enemies and pirates.

The entrance across the bridge, bit like a moat really as it is surrounded by water

This is looking left and right from the bridge

    Walking through the tunnel

   The grounds down the bottom

This is the old cannon looking across to the water

The church of Saint George, built by the Venetians as an ancient temple.

There is a cafe there, where we sat and admired the water views, so beautiful

Starting the climb to the top

This is finally from the top, such amazing views

Just like a post card, the water is so blue

Looking across the walls at the top, what a climb

   Looking into the harbour

   Looking down on the town

And of course the ship in the distance

Now we are at the top

   Coming down again
